What to Wear for Your Photoshoot in Tuscany

Family photoshoot in Siena

Here are some tips on what to wear for a photoshoot in Tuscany to ensure you look your best while complementing the stunning landscapes.

Choose Soft, Earthy Tones

Tuscany’s landscapes are filled with rich natural colors, from the rolling hills to the vineyards and olive groves. Soft, earthy tones like beige, olive green, rust, and soft browns work well with the environment. These colors blend beautifully with the Tuscan scenery and will give your photos a timeless, organic feel.

If You're Not in Siena, Avoid Wearing Black and White

While black and white are timeless colors, they can sometimes be too stark against the warm, natural tones of Tuscany’s landscapes. These contrasts might not blend well with the soft, earthy surroundings. Instead, consider wearing softer colors like earthy tones, pastels, or neutrals. These hues complement the Tuscan backdrop and create a more flattering, harmonious look in your photos.

This is an example where I would have suggested not wearing black, as it didn't complement the colors of the background.

However, if you’re in the city of Siena, black and white can work wonderfully. The Duomo’s iconic black and white stripes offer a unique contrast that can result in striking and artistic images, making it a fun choice for photos in this historic city.

Dress for the Season

Tuscany’s weather varies throughout the year, so it’s important to dress accordingly:

  • Spring and Summer: Light, breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, and silk are perfect for warm weather. Dresses, flowy skirts, and light shirts are great options.

  • Fall and Winter: Layers work well in cooler months. A cozy sweater, scarf, or jacket can add texture to your photos while keeping you comfortable. Rich jewel tones like burgundy, deep green, and mustard also look stunning against Tuscany’s autumnal hues.

Avoid Overly Bright Colors or Bold Patterns

Bright colors can clash with the natural surroundings. Bold patterns can also distract from the beauty of the landscape and the focus of the photos. Instead, opt for solid colors or subtle patterns that complement the scenery.

Be Comfortable and Practical - MOST IMPORTANT TIP!

Tuscany’s terrain can be uneven, with cobblestone streets or rolling hills. Comfortable footwear is a must, especially if you plan to walk between locations. Opt for stylish flats, comfortable boots, or low heels that allow you to move easily. You can always change into dressier shoes for certain shots.

Coordinate, But Don’t Match

If you’re having a couple or family photoshoot, coordinate your outfits with others, but avoid matching exactly. Choose complementary colors that work well together, such as soft pastels, neutral tones, or earthy shades. This will ensure everyone looks cohesive without looking too uniform.

Consider the Location

Tuscany offers a variety of settings for photoshoots, from vineyards to charming medieval towns. Choose your outfits based on the location:

  • Countryside or Vineyards: Flowing dresses or casual, elegant attire work well here. Think about earthy tones and fabrics that will flow with the breeze.

  • Tuscan Towns: For a more urban look, opt for sophisticated yet relaxed outfits—think tailored pants, button-down shirts, or dresses with a bit of structure.

  • Hilltop Views: For dramatic shots against panoramic views, opt for simple, elegant outfits that won’t compete with the stunning landscape.

Don’t Forget Hair and Makeup

While thinking about hair and makeup can be challenging when traveling, they can truly enhance your photos. If you have the time, paying attention to these details can make a significant difference in the final look of your images. If you're unsure where to go, feel free to ask your photographer for recommendations on the best local salons to ensure you look and feel your best for your photoshoot.

Prepare Your Clothing in Advance
To avoid any last-minute stress, it’s a good idea to prepare your clothing ahead of time. This allows you to try everything on, make sure it fits well, and ensure that your outfits complement each other and the location. Planning ahead also gives you time to iron or steam your clothes and make sure they’re ready for your photoshoot, so you can focus on enjoying the experience instead of worrying about wardrobe details.

Be Yourself

The most important tip is to wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident. The best photos come from moments when you feel at ease, so choose something that reflects your personality and style.
